Jasmine | Teacher And Blogger

Meet Jasmine: Jasmine Hwang is an incredible inspiration to us at Velé because she proclaims the message of self-worth through the way she lives and carries herself.  By day, she works as a teacher at an arts school in Los Angeles, where she is lucky to practice her philosophy that all students are worthy of love.

She is also on the journey of creating a more sustainable lifestyle by means of ethical fashion and slow living. Her blog, The Pleb Life, is filled with her findings and also, beautifully records a process of self-discovery. She has a profound way of knitting words and imagery together to give a glimpse of the simple and meaningful life she lives. Jasmine isn't afraid of being vulnerable and has so much authenticity behind her voice.

Velé is built on the foundation of empowering women and encouraging them to be accepting of exactly who they are. We are all a work in progress yet still worthy and wanted, despite our flaws.

How Has a Friend encouraged you lately?

I have been SO lucky to have so many friends encouraging me in my life. After a good cry and a big hug, all of them have told me to take care of myself because “you cannot pour from an empty cup.” And because I struggle with self-care, they’ll remind me to be kind to myself and to tell myself some positive affirmations. There’s also nothing a couple of drinks and a bowl of french fries can’t fix.

What would you share with a friend who's struggling to know her self worth?

It’s not a quote, but a book that I try to read every year or so is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It always gives me the perspective I need to step outside of myself and see the world in a happier way.

What does the message “you are worthy and wanted” mean to you?

"You are worthy and wanted” — four simple, yet powerful words that we don’t hear nearly enough. They mean that I am loved and a part of something greater.

When do you Feel most empowered?

I feel the most empowered when I feel connected and supported by friends and those around me. I think the world would feel more empowered if everyone knew that they were loved and worthy. Also a good cup of strong coffee doesn’t hurt either!

Any favorite quotes when you need a little boost?

Oh I have so many quotes that I love! If you can’t tell from my Instagram, I LOVE quotes! There are just so many well-versed people out there! I try to start out most mornings meditating on a quote for the day. A few of my favorite ones that I always go back to though are…

“It is not happy people who are grateful. It is happy people who are grateful.”

“Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”

“It is better to light a candle than to complain about the darkness.”

"Be kind to yourself. Try not to compete with others. Focus on your own work and your own voice.” —Lina Scheynius
